Learning Letter

Work completed in the course:
I think the work for this course was extremely useful for preparing me for teaching. I especially enjoyed the book projects. Knowing that all these books are out there for our use, and getting to hear the importance and how we can use these books from our peers was especially helpful. I Will definitely use them as resources for teaching. I also liked doing the blog posts for reflection on my own education and how the standards connect to that, but I’m not sure that I will utilize them as a source while teaching. I also thought the assigned readings for the NES textbook were very helpful, it kept me on track and helped me pace myself through it, rather than reading it all at once.

Theories and Concepts covered:
All the theories and concepts we covered in class were impactful to me, but none so much as the importance of graphic novels and visual literacy. This was a concept that I had not thought much about before this class, and I was one of those people who thought that graphic novels were just for younger students or students who were struggling readers. After this class, my thinking has changed and I now understand the importance of graphic novels and that they have just as much detail and the impact that traditional novels do.

How your participation has influenced your thinking about yourself as a teacher:

I think my participation in this class helped make me visualize myself as a teacher. When doing the presentations, I got to experiment with different modes of instruction, even if it was only for 15 minutes, which was extremely helpful when thinking about what teaching methods I will utilize. I also think that hearing the materials others used for their book projects was very helpful for building my teaching toolbox, and it got me thinking about how we can almost use any resource, and how to tweak those resources to use in a classroom.
